Is your car or truck summer ready? This week’s blog features the top auto glass questions we hear each summer. I have a cracked windshield. Can I wait or should I repair/replace it? For safety reasons, it is important to fix any windshield damage as soon as possible. If the damage is not in the driver’s line of sight, most chips can be repaired if smaller than the size of a silver dollar. If larger, the windshield usually must be replaced.

We’re leaving soon, how long will my repair or replacement take?

It depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Most chip repairs can be completed in 25-30 minutes. Because of the complexity of some vehicles and the features embedded in the windshield, full replacement could take up to 3 hours, but most windshield replacements can be completed in about an hour. Do I need to bring my vehicle to a Binswanger branch? We can come to you! Safely and with limited contact. Your time is valuable and we understand that your life is busy. What are your COVID-19 protocols? Upon arrival and prior to entering each Binswanger location, all personnel’s body temperatures are tested using an infrared thermometer. We treat the interior of a customer vehicle as a “Clean Room”. Our policies require employees to approach vehicles with clean hands and wearing gloves. If the technician’s current gloves are dirty, they must don a fresh pair of gloves over them. Technicians are supplied with sanitizers and disinfectants to be readily accessible for spot cleaning as needed throughout the day.

Once onsite, technicians will wear a face mask and greet customers from a distance with a smile instead of a handshake. Will you replace the stickers on my windshield?

Yes, if possible. We will remove inspection stickers, plus anything else affixed to your windshield and, if legally permissible, we’ll re-apply to the new windshield. Please note that some states do not allow the inspection sticker to be re-applied to the new windshield and require purchase of a new sticker within a certain time frame after a windshield is replaced. Please check with your state licensing agency for more detail I’ve broken my windshield more than once. Are my insurance rates going to rise?

No, your insurance rates should not go up as a result of auto glass repair or replacement only. Insurers do not factor glass claims alone into the equation when determining your rates (but do often count total number of claims). Unlike accidents, windshield replacements are no-fault comprehensive claims and by law cannot cause a rate increase. To be sure, check your policy or call your agent.

I had my chip repaired, but I can still see something there. Is that a problem?

Don’t be alarmed if you can see a little variation in your windshield where a chip repair was done. The only cause for alarm is if you see a crack begin to run from the area. If that happens, it is time for a replacement.

Is it guaranteed that a chip or crack that can be repaired won’t spread during the repair process? No. In some instances, through no fault of the repair technician, attempts to repair a windshield can result in the chip or crack becoming larger. However, we do guarantee that upon completion of a successful repair, the chip or crack will not crack further and that the repair will pass any state vehicle inspection, or we will credit the cost of the repair toward a replacement.
