Project Overview

The Lester Community Center is a vital hub for the Binghampton neighborhood in Memphis, providing a safe, modern, and engaging space for residents of all ages. This transformative project, developed for the City of Memphis, replaces an outdated facility with a vibrant new building designed to foster community, recreation, and learning. The architecture, envisioned by brg3s architects, prioritizes openness and connectivity, using extensive glazing to create a welcoming and light-filled environment. Binswanger Glass was proud to deliver the precision glazing package essential to achieving the center’s aesthetic and performance goals.

Key Features & Glazing Details

Transparent and Inviting Design: The building’s facade is defined by its transparency, creating a strong visual connection between the interior activities and the surrounding community. Binswanger Glass installed the Kawneer 1600 Wall System 1 Curtainwall System, which allows for expansive glass spans that flood the interior with natural daylight.
High-Performance Envelope: To ensure year-round comfort and energy efficiency, the design incorporates Kawneer’s Trifab® VersaGlaze® 451T framing system. This thermally broken storefront system works in conjunction with high-performance glass to provide excellent insulation and solar control.
Customized Glass Makeup: The glazing features a sophisticated makeup from fabricator Nashville Tempered, using Vitro Architectural Glass Solarban 70 on an Optigray substrate. This combination offers superior solar heat gain control while maintaining clear views. An acid-etch frit pattern was applied to select lites, adding a layer of visual texture and privacy without sacrificing light.
Durable Entrances: For reliability in a high-traffic public facility, durable Kawneer storefront doors were installed, ensuring secure and dependable access for all community members.
