Project Overview

Congo Falls at the San Antonio Zoo sets a new global standard for animal habitats and guest experiences. At the center of this immersive environment is the Mays Family Silverback Peak, a revolutionary 70-foot-tall gorilla tower. Binswanger Glass provided the comprehensive glazing package for this cutting-edge space, ensuring a seamless and safe visual connection between the animals and the public.

The primary goal of Congo Falls is to provide a highly enriching, multi-level environment for the zoo’s gorillas while giving visitors an unprecedented viewing experience. By utilizing advanced glass and acrylic technologies, the design aims to remove visual barriers, fostering a deeper connection between humans and wildlife while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Key Features & Glazing Innovations

• Mays Family Silverback Peak: This first-of-its-kind, 70-foot tower allows gorillas to climb from their open-air habitat up to a fully glazed observation area atop the cliff wall.
• Skyline Views: The Binswanger glazed observation area offers the gorillas and zoo guests sweeping, panoramic views of the San Antonio skyline. From this vantage point, you can also see the zoo’s beautiful event center, The Ralston, another premier project successfully completed by Binswanger Glass.
• Immersive Viewing Elements: The habitat incorporates a unique Reynolds Acrylic bubble and expansive GlasPro laminated glass viewing panels, allowing guests to get face-to-face with the animals.
• Natural Light Integration: American Skylights’ pyramid skylight and Velux dome skylights flood the interior spaces with natural daylight, creating a healthy and vibrant environment.
• High-Performance Envelope: We installed the Tubelite T14000 storefront system paired with Guardian Glass SNX 5123 clear glass, fabricated by Precision Glass Industries. This combination delivers exceptional clarity and solar control to keep the interior comfortable under the Texas sun.
